I joined ODS in 1995. I was a member of Alvechurch Dramatic Society at the time, and having been to see several productions at Ombersley, I decided to join a more local group. Initially I just wanted to be in the chorus and my first involvement was in “1939 and all that” which was fabulous – dressing up in uniforms from the armed forces and signing all the war time songs. Later I accepted a very small part in “Camelot” in which I had about two lines to speak! After that confidence grew and I played very much more substantial roles in “Communicating Doors” and “Murdered to Death”, and really enjoyed playing the “bady” as the “The Pied Piper”.
This year I decided to step down from the Society’s Committee having been a member for many years and “Chair” for the last 4 years.
I have undertaken most of the “off stage” and behind the scenes responsibilities as well, including serving refreshments, Properties, Prompt, Assistant Stage Manager and Front of House Manager. In April 2011 I had my first go at “Directing” and really enjoyed the experience. “The Curious Savage” by John Patrick was a play I had seen many years ago and it was a real pleasure to put my own stamp on it. At the end of November 2013 I directed “Christmas Carol” – the musical, which was wonderful and a great success!
As well as the Drama we also meet socially and our Committee organises a variety of events including theatre trips to support productions by other local amateur groups, quiz nights, skittles and horse racing meetings to name but a few. I would encourage anyone who is looking for a fun activity to come and join us – you will be made very welcome!
We meet every Monday from 7.30pm – 10pm at Ombersley Memorial Hall.
